Statement
My landscape paintings explore the sublime aspects of nature’s processes and its extreme shifts. Images of environmental change, for example, can at times provoke a range of conflicting emotions from anxiety and denial to aesthetic admiration. Imagining how the futures of civilization and the natural world will be linked, these responses influence my expression. Ultimately, there is a desire behind my depictions for the broader consideration of the relationship between both forces.
About the Artist
After living and working in New York City for 15 eventful years, Michelle Manley now enjoys exploring life in Austin, Texas, her new home as of 2011. As a native of Arizona, memories of the natural environments of western America remained with her as she experienced life in the Northeast. Her personal observations of landscapes and of the attitudes toward nature across the country and abroad, inspire and inform her work. She exhibits her artwork nationally, and her past awards include a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant for painting.
